Many patients, service users and healthcare workers have requested a transparent version of a face mask. Introductionįace masks in healthcare can be used both for source control (worn by an infected individual to prevent onward transmission to others via droplets) and for protection of healthy persons (to protect the wearer from droplets and splashes when exposed to an infected individual). This document makes no distinction between a Type IIR medical mask and an FRSM and the terms can be used interchangeably. Where the term ‘medical mask’ is used in this specification it is used on the basis of the term used by the World Health Organization (WHO) and EN 14683:2019, but it is recognised that the term ‘fluid resistant surgical mask’ (FRSM) is also in common use. This document does not necessarily reflect the views or regulatory position of any of these bodies. Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) The group would like to thank the following for providing comment and advice during the production of this document: Surgical Materials Testing Laboratory (SMTL), NHS Wales Health & Social Care, Northern Ireland (HSCNI) The following organisations and their representatives contributed as members of the group:

We recommend that users and manufacturers submit their comments to and these will be considered when the document is next reviewed. This specification has been written to meet a demonstrated demand for transparent face masks at the time of writing (spring 2021), and it is acknowledged that further revision may be necessary. Other technical solutions may also demonstrate the safety and performance of transparent face masks. The aim of the group was to produce a technical specification, based on test methods and some of the design and performance requirements used in established/recognised standards, for transparent face masks, some of which could be considered for use as an alternative to Type IIR medical masks.Ĭompliance with this specification cannot be used as a presumption of conformity with the corresponding essential requirements of any relevant regulations which may apply to transparent face masks. It will however retain its integral strength.ġ0 = Resistant – after sustained contact there may be a minimal amount of staining on the surface of the Acrycast. This technical specification has been facilitated by the NHS Transparent Face Mask Working group brought together by NHS England and NHS Improvement ( NHSE/I). Therefore to ensure compatibility please test the products prior to production.Ġ = Not resistant – it dissolves, attacks, damaged the Acrycast so it loses its strength, clarity etc.ĥ = Partial Resistance – there might be some slight staining, crazing or some swelling of the Acrycast. Please find below a table showing a list of chemicals that Acrycast has been tested against – clearly these tests have been done in the laboratory in controlled conditions and any minor variation can cause a change in the results. It is important that you store Acrycast according to the specified conditions (see general information section). Acrycast will absorb small amounts of water – this is not an issue unless you are then heating and forming the product as the quick release of the moisture can cause blistering. Possible expansion due to heat and moistureĪcrycast generally has a good resistance to water, alkaline agents, aqueous solutions of inorganic matter and even some diluted acids.
